The University and The City: Architecture in Context

Central European University (CEU) is embarking on one of the largest current real estate projects in Hungary with the redevelopment and refurbishment of approximately 30,000 square meters of its campus in downtown Budapest, a World Heritage site. Such an enterprise raises a number of questions and exciting challenges related to the interplay between contemporary architecture and urban cultural heritage.

Invited by the Cultural Heritage Studies Program, Sheila and John will be travelling to Budapest to take part in a roundtable discussion on their approach to the campus redevelopment. The roundtable is focused around the following questions: How does a 21st-century university picture itself within the heart of Budapest? How do the architects contribute to the realisation of this image? How will the new building fit into the historical urban landscape and the architectural heritage of Budapest?
