AAI Site Visit to University College Cork Student Hub
The project incorporates original 1850’s buildings with a new extension and a glazed office tower overlooking the college grounds. This delicate light filled vertical “lantern” is tailored in height to the neighbouring Quadrangle buildings, and in form to respond to lines of sight along approaching vistas and from key campus locations.
Student services are currently distributed across 25 different locations. The Students’ Union had a desire to centralise them and our design is carefully assembled to make one coherent proposal, interlinked, interdependent and collaborating. The Hub facilitates cross-promotion of student services, and creating a sense of ownership and identity while providing efficient and enjoyable teaching, office and social spaces, all designed for a mix of interaction, instruction and learning. A new stone “arm” encloses a welcoming Market Hall, a large active central gathering space where all life happens. Bridges and balconies crisscross and flank the Market Hall, activating and animating this student-led technology-enabled adaptable space, bringing activities into the core.
PPE is not required for this site visit.
