RIAI Gold Medal 2007-2009: Highly Commended
21 February 2018
At the RIAI Gold Medal (2007-2009) ceremony that took place last night, O’Donnell + Tuomey were Highly Commended for the design of the Sean O’Casey Community Centre.
Our other scheme, Cultúrlann Uí Chanáin in Derry, was also among 9 projects shortlisted for the Medal.
Highly Commended is awarded by the Jury in respect of O’Donnell and Tuomey’s Seán O’Casey Community Centre in Dublin’s East Wall completed in 2008. An intense and nuanced arrangement for four core user groups provides a manifestly successful, robust venue and focus for a vibrant community. Diagonal movement within the building works as a foil to its overall orthogonal organisation, producing rich moments of overlap between uses. The organisation on the site is one of real sophistication balancing spatial control with an understanding of how spaces are appropriated – an affirmation of the tangible value of architectural design in supporting human activity.
