RIAI Conference 2019: Call for a change
21 October 2019
In his presentation to the RIAI Conference 2019, John Tuomey called for a change in the system of procurement for public work.
Researching the 85 year history of the RIAI Gold Medal, the highest award in Irish Architecture, a common pattern was identified in the profile of the medal-winning architects. They were young at the time of their commission, average age 39. They had no particular expertise in the building type. The current system is set against a rising generation who find themselves eliminated from consideration for significant public work. Ireland urgently needs to engage the energies of emerging and ambitious architectural practices. Their talent has been recognised at home and abroad. They are ready and waiting to make a powerful contribution. The system has to change.
