ODT win new School of Architecture for University of Liverpool

Kenneth Frampton announces the unanimous jury decision: O’Donnell + Tuomey win the international competition for a new school of Architecture at the University of Liverpool.

The jury unanimously agreed that the design submitted by O’Donnell and Tuomey for the new Liverpool School of Architecture should be awarded first prize. This scheme was highly valued for the way in which it not only rationally reorganised the available space in both the original Georgian Terrace and the Leverhulme building but also established a new head building, which was both subtly inflected towards the new park and the existing cathedral. At the same time, it was dynamically articulated so as to orchestrate a series of mezzanine studio spaces volumetrically linked to the generous café, and the exhibition spaces situated at grade. The new elevators are strategically located between each historic part of the complex, in the first instance in association with a library and, in the second, in relation to the existing courtyard separating the Leverhulme building and terraces facing out onto Abercromby square. The jurors also appreciated the didactically tectonic use of the timber folded plate construction, partially inspired by the geometry of the cathedral.
