Knowledge of Rome must be physical, sweated into the system, worked up through the thinning shoe leather…Partly I crept up on the city, partly attacked it – in the sense of attacking a vast problem. My object was to walk it into my head and (this time) keep it there…And, inside Rome, I repeat, to be anything but walking is estrangement.
