Photographers’ Gallery wins RIBA London Regional Award
13 June 2013
The Photographers’ Gallery responds directly and poetically to its client and to its site. Using camera-like apertures, views are established to surrounding urban fabric or, in reverse, from the adjacent square into the social spaces of the building.
With a limited budget the architects O’Donnell and Tuomey were able to double the gallery space, building two lightweight floors on to an existing brick structure. The new floors have greater floor-to-ceiling height more appropriate to gallery display and the new building is cleverly and originally integrated into the building below through use of a new sheath of rendered façade that unites the two.
The Photographers’ Gallery makes a unique building blending the existing structure with new. With limited resource a fantastic and well-used new home for their occupant has been provided.
